Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is today the most commonly performed bariatric procedure worldwide. A large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a slim, banana-shaped "sleeve" that limits food intake and reduces hunger hormones.
Overview
Benefits
- 60–70% excess weight loss within 12–18 months
- Significant improvement in type-2 diabetes and blood pressure
- No rerouting of the intestines
- Reduced hunger through lower ghrelin levels
The Procedure
Performed laparoscopically under general anaesthesia through 4–5 small incisions. The surgeon removes roughly 80% of the stomach and staples the remaining sleeve. The procedure typically takes 60–90 minutes.
Preparation
Pre-operative work-up includes blood tests, endoscopy, dietitian counselling and a supervised pre-surgery liver-shrinking diet for 1–2 weeks.
Recovery
Most patients are discharged within 2–3 days and return to light activity within 1–2 weeks. A staged diet progresses from liquids to soft foods to solids over 4–6 weeks.
Risks & Considerations
As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection and, rarely, staple-line leak. Our rigorous protocols keep complication rates very low.
